Gratitude

Recently, I approached Kim, a guest in the Hotel, as she was getting her morning coffee. She had arrived two days before and was experiencing the island for the first time. The weather had cooperated and the lavender was in full bloom.

I knew she was leaving that day and wanted to wish her safe travels. She warmly returned my greeting, then said, “You know, this was not a stay. A “stay” is where you are until you go on to someplace else. I didn’t stay here, I was home. And now I’m leaving but will take memories with me.”

At July’s end, this gift of appreciation was precious and life-giving. We offered a space for her to be—to rest, restore, to feel at home. And in her words of thanks, she gifted us with the same.
